Want some candies? Go to Strand!

If you needed another reason to go to Strand Bookstore, which is taking part in our bookstores program, we've got it for you and it's as sweet as it can get!

The New York Daily News reported yesterday (and thanks to mediabistro.com: GalleyCat for the link) that "customers are abuzz over a newly built Candyland on the shelves beneath the 40-foot-long checkout counter at the Union Square used-book mecca."

Customers, according to the article, can find there Old-fashioned sweets like $2.95 boxes of Gobstoppers, $1.95 chewable wax lips and three-for-35-cents Pixy Stix.

The reason is very simple - another way to generate income, especially from those who just browse the books in the store, as Fred Bass, Strand co-owner
, explains on the article (he's the one standing on the photo above in front of the candy shelves).

Candies are of course just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to considering a visit in the store.
Located in 828 Broadway (at 12th St.), this New York's independent landmark bookstore is one of most famous bookstores in the world. As mediabistro.com: GalleyCat reminds us Strand "boasts an 18-mile collection's worth of new, used, rare, and out-of-print books. Some of the rare titles include a first-edition of Lewis Baltz's Park City, a signed first-edition of Hunter S. Thompson's Kingdom of Fear, and a signed complete set of the Writings of Mark Twain: Definitive Edition. The last collector's item will set a buyer back $5,500."

And of course customers at Strand can plant a tree for every book they buy there and receive our sticker at the counter!

What's the connection between 18 miles of books, Julie and Julia, Robert Pattinson and Eco-Libris?

In one word: Strand.

Yes, we just wanted to remind you that if you happen to be in New York and you look for a good bookstore, then
Strand Bookstore is your place.

Located in
828 Broadway (at 12th St.), this New York's independent landmark bookstore is not only one of most famous bookstores in the world (Did you know that Nora Ephron shot a scene from the movie Julie and Julia at the Strand, or that Robert Pattinson plays Strand employee Tyler Hawkins in the new movie, Remember Me?), but also a partner of Eco-Libris.

Strand are taking part in our bookstore program and customers at the store can plant a tree for every book they buy there and receive our sticker at the counter! And just to make sure you won't forget about the option to green up the book/s you just bought, you'll find next to the counters this reminder:

So if you're in New York, don't forget to visit Strand. With their tremendous selection of more than 2.5 million used, new and rare books, I can assure you a great experience!

Strand's address: 828 Broadway (at 12th St.) New York, NY 10003

Minneapolis, here we come!

We're happy to announce on a new bookstore that joins our bookstore program: Eye of Horus. This bookstore of Minneapolis is not just a regular bookstore, it's a metaphysical one!

Eye of Horus is the 25th bookstore in
our bookstore program. Taking part in the program means that customers at the store can plant a tree for every book they buy there and receive our sticker at the counter!

And what does a metaphysical store mean exactly? here's a little bit about the store (thank you to Jane Hansen, creative director at the store for the info):

Eye of Horus is the metaphysical store,
Mythic Art Gallery and Labyrinth nested between the Wedge and Uptown areas of South Minneapolis. We provide books, music, tools and services to support creativity, spiritual awakening (or deepening) and centered living. At the Eye, all paths are welcome.

At Eye of Horus, we believe Myth and Ritual are transformative, not outdated, and that spirituality can be expressed both in action and contemplation.
Our labyrinth is a perfect example of our active approach in providing a space where individuals and the community come together through events, workshops, and discussions which enhance their practice and inform their journey.

Our mission is to provide the books and sacred items for all alternative religious studies, Asatru, Buddhist, Christian Mystic, Druid, Hindu, Muslim, Pagan, Shinto, Taoism, Voudon, Wicca, etc. We honor all sources of wisdom and respect all Paths to Spirit; rooted, as we are, in Earth-Based Spirituality, with staff reflecting a variety of paths and traditions. Although we specialize in the tools and supplies for Earth-based and Mystery Paths such as Wicca, Druidry, Shamanic studies, New Age, etc., we believe in the value of diversity in belief and practice, and strive to support all alternative paths.

Eye of Horus is a store of open doors, with deep roots in community. We strive to be a resource for the local community by providing meeting space and classes at our store, and online via our
Yahoo Group, and MySpace Page, not to mention our online store, which makes items and books accessible in otherwise isolated areas.

We are dedicated to creating a sustainable business which, while serving our customers, also helps sustain not only community, staff and artisan partners, but the environment as well.
We believe that, through connection with the Sacred, every being has the ability to awaken their spirits and transform themselves, and, through that awakening, transform and heal the planet.

Isn't that a great bookstore or what? Here are the the store's details:

Address: 2717 Lyndale Ave S Minneapolis, MN 55408

Who's on Plenty Magazine's state-by-state guide to green hotspots?

I always look for a good green guide whenever I am going somewhere so to learn what green hotspots I can visit. Actually, I'm still waiting for the guide that we'll give me updated info on the green places in Chicago, Miami or any other of the major big cities. In the meantime, Plenty Magazine offers its version of state-by-state guide to green hotspots.

Kimberly Fusaro and Madhu Puri brings you several dozen of our favorite spots around the United States, showing you that you don't have to venture far from home to find eco-friendly places to eat, shop, and play.

I was happy to find new recommendations on places I didn't know about. I also found two bookstores on the guide, including our friends at Doylestown Bookshop in Pennsylvania that are taking part in our bookstores program, which also got a mention! (the other one is the Lower East Side Girls Club Fair Trade Gift Shop and Book Store) Here's what's written about Doylestown Bookshop:

Big, bad independent bookstore. Partner with Eco-Libris, which plants trees for books. 16 S. Main St., Doylestown, PA. 215-230-7610; doylestownbookshop.com

So you're welcome to check this guide, add your own recommendations at the end and of course visit and enjoy these great green hotspots. And if you know of any other good green local guides, please feel free to share it with us!

Yours,
Raz @ Eco-Libris
