A new book, Guerrilla Yardwork by Peter Korchnak is going green with Eco-Libris!

We're happy to announce on a new collaboration with author Peter Korchnak who has just released a great book to welcome spring with: Guerrilla Yardwork: The First-Time Home Owner's Handbook. In collaboration with-Eco Libris one tree will be planted for every paper copy of this book sold.

In 2010 we collaborated with Peter on 'The Portland Bottom Line', a book he edited exploring how small businesses can effectively and efficiently shift toward sustainability and thrive. So we're very glad to partner with him again on another great book that we're positive many people will find both valuable and enjoyable.

So what's Guerilla Yardwork about? Here are all the details including our review of the book!

About the book:

Guerrilla Yardwork: The First-Time Home Owner’s Handbook rethinks yardwork as you know it. Part manifesto, part field manual, it draws upon the tenets of guerrilla warfare outlined by Sun Tzu, Che Guevara, and others, to introduce guerrilla yardwork as both a yardvolutionary philosophy and an effective practice for every first-time home owner strapped for cash and pressed for time.

“Guerrilla yardwork utilizes the element of surprise to launch small, repetitive attacks at unpredictable times and locations around the yard to weaken Bad Nature and promote Good Nature in Her stead. Offensive, highly mobile, and fluid in character, guerrilla yardwork is marked by swift action of short duration, followed by rapid withdrawal.” The yard won’t know what hit it. Start your yardvolution at GuerrillaYardwork.com.

About the author:

Peter Korchnak is a retired yardwork guerrilla in Portland, Oregon, American Robotnik, and the creator of The Portland Bottom Line: Practices for Your Small Business from America’s Hotbed of Sustainability. Find his front yard at PeterKorchnak.com.

Our review of Guerrilla Yardwork:

I am happy to say, I loved this book. The author, Peter Korchnak, does such a fantastic job of giving you information with a humorous voice and approach that not only educates you along the way, but entertains as well. This book is perfect for any homeowner whether you are just starting out or have been fighting the good battle for years.

The book also doesn’t just go with the normal upkeep of a city lawn. Oh no, he gives you the whole lot of possible yards from the postage stamp size, up to acreages of land. It goes though grass, and gravel, plants and trees and weeds, all the way to rodents and other animals. Add in the personal sustainability information and you have a full book to enjoy. I am so glad to have been able to read this book as I have a feeling I will be holding on to it for years to come as a reference guide. My only complaint is that it does not have an index. That would have been very helpful for future use.

In the end, I enjoyed this read, especially now that spring is officially upon us and I see all the work, the battles, ahead of me, again.

You can purchase Guerilla Yardwork on Amazon.com (both e-book and paperback formats are available).

Pick-a-Woo Woo's new book, The Elf that Flew, is going green with Eco-Libris!

We are happy to announce a new collaboration with our partner, the Australian publishers
Pick-a-Woo Woo, on a great new green children's book that was just released: The Elf that Flew.

625 trees are planted with Eco-Libris for this book. As you can see in the picture above, our logo is also added to the book's cover.

Based in Western Australia, Pick-a-Woo Woo Publishers are publishers of Mind Body Spirit books for children. Their inspirational books are designed to help children connect with their intuition and inner guidance, develop their awareness skills and enhance their Mind, Body, Spirit connection.

This book is a green book, not just because of the trees planted for it, but also because of the story it tells and the messages it sends to the readers. Here are more details about The Elf that Flew:

Love and Joy give you wings to fly.
A magical tale about Greenleaf the Elf who lives happily in the rainforest surrounded by his many tree friends. A chance encounter with flying flower fairies propels Greenleaf on an unlikely quest to fly like the fairies. Told with humour and warmth, this tale celebrates the importance of being yourself while promoting love for our natural environment.

Lindy grew up in Sydney at a time when children were encouraged to play outside until dark. The local bush was a place where nature and a child's imagination created magical worlds and limitless stories.Lindy always expected to meet fairies and bunyips and was always surprised when she didn't.

Lindy's love of nature led to a career in horticulture. Later in life she decided to pursue her other love, literature. After completing an English degree, Lindy then worked in Mental Health and volunteered as a telephone counselor. During this time Lindy became aware of society's disconnection from the natural world and the rise in mental illness. Lindy's experience and innate wisdom spoke of how spending time in nature was not only beneficial to mental and physical health but vital for the spirit.

In her new career as Storyteller, Lindy seeks to connect people with the healing essence of nature. Through the written and oral traditions, Lindy uses humour and imagination to tell tales of simple spiritual truths, promoting the love of nature and fostering a sense of stewardship. Lindy encourages children and their families outdoors to explore and reconnect with their environment.

Lindy considers herself blessed to live on the Central Coast of NSW surrounded by her family and friends. The spectacular natural scenery of the region is the inspiration and setting for her stories....and she now meets the fairy folk regularly though the bunyip remains elusive.

Copies of the book are available for purchase on Amazon.

Eco-Libris is collaborating with Moon Willow Press on Infernal Drums by Anthony Wright

Moon Willow Press is a small independent publisher helping to sustain arboreal ecosystems while celebrating the written word. It is also partnering with Eco-Libris to plant trees for its published books and we're happy to announce on a new book Moon Willow Press is publishing and planting trees for with Eco-Libris - Infernal Drums by Anthony Wright.

This new literary road novel is not just a great book, but also an example of Moon Willow Press' commitment to the environment. It presents impressive environmental savings:2 fully grown trees; 1,114 gallons of water; 68 pounds of solid waste; and 231 pounds of greenhouse gases were saved, as MWP printed on chlorine free paper made with 100% post-consumer waste (except for the cover, printed on FSC-certified paper). In addition, 186 trees will be planted for this book with Eco-Libris!

Here are more details about Infernal Drums:

Anthony Wright, also author of the short story collection Smoke Ghosts & Other Outré Tales, presents powerful storytelling with a sense of compassion for people, the environment, and indigenous customs and beliefs. His perceptive description of native peoples, places, and beliefs mingles with modern-day explorers and flirts with magical realism.
Wright has been compared to Burroughs, Bowles, Dostoyevsky, Kerouac, and even to some degree Joyce as he searches out the sacred and profane of contemporary society.

Infernal Drums explores the spiritual awakening of protagonist Jonah Everman, who regards himself as a writer who drifts, but is really a drifter who writes. Journeying to Mexico, he runs afoul of the law and pays out big to avoid jail. He then heads to the capital where he finds a few kindred spirits, newspaper work, and trouble in spades. Forging an unholy alliance with occult forces, Jonah’s moral destruction seems assured. Or is it?

Infernal Drums takes the reader on a guided tour into the festering underworld of the drug war torn Mexico recent headlines have taught us all to fear. Anthony Wright knows his way around this seedy battlefield. -William Hjortsberg, author/screenwriter of Falling Angel (Angel Heart) and Legend

The book is available in paperback, Kindle format and other
multiple e-reader formats at Smashwords.

Tommy's book has created a revolution in theories of human choice and the emotive programming of computers, with a brilliant new frame for spiritual joy. Tommy frequently muses about how his field of Emotive Programming -- algorithms that teach computers to feel-- might relate to a life torn apart by the loss of our loved ones, serious illness, destruction of the brain's higher functions in stroke, job loss, financial ruin, and other painful life changes. His creation of "Algorithmic Psychology" seminars worldwide has helped thousands look at life in a very different new frame, a frame in which life's painful events do not have to change our joy.

It's not the end of the world so let's celebrate it by planting new trees!

Saturday, or "The Day of Rapture" passed with some rain, but it wasn't the end of the world, literally. I guess the news that we're still here are good news for everyone, except maybe those who waited to be “raptured” - ascended to heaven before the end of the world, exactly at 6 p.m.

But there's a cure that can help even these disappointed rapture believers:

Plant a tree.

There's nothing more symbolic of new life than a new tree (well, other than a baby, but that's something that you can't really do within a day or even few weeks..). Sadly, their destruction, unlike
the apocalyptic predictions of Harold Camping, is very real and it seems to be getting worst (The BBC News reported last Thursday that "Amazon rainforest deforestation rises sharply"). If this trend will continue, it can be a real threat to the planet's future.

If you're looking for a religious point of view, just think of the beautiful words of the American poet Leonora Speyer:

The trees are God's great alphabet:
With them He writes in shining green
Across the world His thoughts serene.

So start this week with a hope and some faith in a better (living) world by planting trees. We invite you to plant trees with us through our planting partners,
three highly respected US and UK based non-profit organizations that work in collaboration with local communities in developing countries to plant these trees. These trees are planted in high ecological and sustainable standards in Latin America (Nicaragua, Guatemala, Panama, Belize, Honduras) and Africa (Malawi), where deforestation is a crucial problem.

I know it might not compare to heaven, but it's still a heavenly feeling to plant a new tree. Guaranteed!

Earth Day Campaign - 41 Reasons to Plant a Tree for Your Book: Reason no. 37

We continue with our Earth Day campaign - 41 Reasons to Plant a Tree for Your Book, where we share with you 41 reasons provided by readers in celebration of the upcoming 41st anniversary of Earth Day!

With more than 190,000 trees planted so far on behalf of readers, authors and publishers working with Eco-Libris, it's no surprise that we think planting trees to green up books is a great idea.. But we also want to hear what readers think about it and why they believe planting trees for their books is a good idea.

So for 41 days until Earth Day, we publish here the 41 best replies we receive, one reply a day. All replies are gathered and presented on the Earth Day 2011 page.

Reason no. 37:
Unlike many other situations in life where there are no right or wrong decisions, just actions and their consequences, it's clear here that planting trees is the right thing to do! - Miranda

Earth Day 2011 Campaign - 41 Reasons to Plant a Tree for Your Book: Reason no. 36

We continue with our Earth Day campaign - 41 Reasons to Plant a Tree for Your Book, where we share with you 41 reasons provided by readers in celebration of the upcoming 41st anniversary of Earth Day!

Reason no. 36:
I love reading books and I love trees so for me it's a way to combine my two loves! - Jerard

Thank you Jerard for sharing with us your thoughts on planting trees for your books!

Jerard, just like all the other readers whose replies we'll publish, is winning one of the great 41 prizes we give away on this campaign, courtesy of our partners. Winners can choose their prize from a great list of gifts including audiobooks from Simon & Schuster Audio (such as The Half Life by Jennifer Weiner, Left Neglected by Lisa Genova and Essence of Happiness by the Dalai Lama) and great books, like Spit That Out! by Paige Wolf and The Healthy Home by Dave Wentz and Dr. Myron Wentz. You can see the full list of the prizes on our earth day campaign's page.

Every day we'll give further details on one of the prizes. Today we present you with the book The Story of Stuff by Annie Leonard.

The Story of Stuff by Annie Leonard - Americans have way too much Stuff , and way too much of it is toxic. Thats the message Annie Leonard has been spreading ever since her college days, and most recently in her short Internet film The Story of Stuff, which has been viewed by over 12 million people. But the film is only the tip of the iceberg.

This astonishing, inspiring book takes her message to an even higher level. In it she outlines the perils of overconsumption as she traces products back to their sources, through their life spans, and forward into their disposal. The Story of Stuff works on all levels as it brings together information on the environment, the economy, and cultures around the world.

With her trademark compassion, curiosity, and playfulness, Leonard gives firsthand accounts of sneaking into dumps and factories around the world; chronicles the lives of Haitian textile workers and Congolese kids working in deadly mines; shows how our health and well-being are compromised by neurotoxins in our pillows and lead in our childrens lunch boxes; and most important, tells us that this is not the way things have to be. She presents concrete steps for taking action that point the way toward saving our health, our communities, and the planet.

From high school kids to their parents in the suburbs, from government officials to people working in corporations, schools, and churches, The Story of Stuff is a life-changing book. Like Rachel Carsons Silent Spring, it will transform the way you think and act.
