A new memoir, Coming Clean by Sarah Dean, is going green with Eco-Libris!

We are happy to announce on a new collaboration with author Sarah Dean on her new book "Coming Clean: My Letter-Writing Journey".

625 trees will be planted with Eco-Libris for the first edition of this beautiful book, which is a collection of letters written for the sake of healing and growing from the past. Moreover, the book is printed on FSC-certified paper with 30% PCW content.

Here's more about the book from the author's website: This is a book filled with personal letters I've written to people, events, and myself for the sake of "coming clean" with myself and healing and celebrating pieces from my past that have not felt complete. It is my answer to a "bucket list", what I want to take care of before I die.

We're happy to collaborate with Sarah, who is a writer, life coach, workshop leader, and certified wood product auditor. She writes and lives with a balance of extreme honesty, integrity, and compassion.

Book release party will take place at the
Joy Center March 20, 2010 from 7-9:30. Open to public. Limited space. The author will read a few letters, show a story gem, and sell and sign books.

The book is now available on Sarah's website at http://sarah-dean.com/mymaps.php.

An interview with Fiona Robyn, an author with a new novel offered to read for free online!

Fiona Robin is not only a supporter of Eco-Libris, but also a gifted author who has released lately her latest novel, 'Thaw' with an offer you can't refuse: you can read it online for free!

This is definitely a bold move (although there's a growing evidence that such steps actually help to boost sales of printed titles), and we thought it's an opportunity to speak with Fiona about her books and her innovative marketing strategies. We also have a signed copy of the book we're giving away, so check the details at the end of the post.

Hello Fiona and congrats on your new novel. Can you tell us what it is about?

Thank you. ‘Thaw’ follows 32 year old microbiologist, Ruth, as she thinks about whether or not to carry on living. She gives herself three months to decide, and the novel is her journal over these three months.

What was your inspiration for this novel? for the characters?
My characters always appear ‘out of nowhere’, and it was the same with Ruth. As I got to know her, the story emerged. I knew she was a troubled character, and that she used photographs as a way of staying sane, and then I realised she would want to have her portrait painted, and so the Russian painter Red came into being…

This is the fifth novel you publish within only 3 years. How do you it?
I had a head start! I’d been writing for six years when I found my publisher, Snowbooks, and they wanted to publish all three of my novels. There will be more of a gap before the next!

\You decided to do something quite radical and enable readers to read it online for free - why?
It is radical. It’s an experiment, really – my hope is that some people will read it online and then want to buy my previous novels, or that some people will want to read to the end before waiting for it all to appear online. We’ll see if it helps or hinders my sales in the long run!

You're not just a fruitful and talented writer, but also an innovative marketer - can you share with us couple of the strategies you used so far to market your books? what do you find the most effective?

Thank you. I’ve always tried to find marketing strategies that will feel like fun, whether or not they help me to sell more books. I’ve always enjoyed writing my blogs, and I’ve had great fun on my virtual book tour and with the Thaw project. It’s difficult to know what is most effective, but it does seem to be a cumulative thing, and patience is essential. There is a very fine line between asking people to help and becoming annoying, and maybe it’s inevitable that you cross it with some people, so a thick skin is also helpful!

What do you find more challenging - writing a book or marketing it later on?
Both are very challenging, and both are great fun. It takes a very different kind of energy to write a book – a reflective, introspective kind of energy – whereas marketing is all about putting my energy out there. Both activities can be very tiring in different ways, and I need to have a recharge after finishing a book and after a marketing campaign.

Do you think social media is really working? Is it just a better way to communicate with your readers or also a marketing tool?
I do find new readers for my books on Facebook and Twitter, and so I think it does work as a marketing tool, but you have to be even more careful about putting people off – nobody wants adverts for books on their Facebook page all the time. I try to use these tools more as building a profile for myself, by writing about the things that interest me, and then hopefully if people like my writing style they’ll also check out my novels.

How many hours a day do you spend on facebook, twitter and other similar social media platforms?
Hmm, a good question! Maybe an hour or two (or sometimes three). I COULD spend an hour or less if I was focused and I didn’t end up going off on random tangents.

You are an ongoing supporter of Eco-Libris and I know the environmental issue is very important to you. Do you find similar awareness and concerns among readers?
I don’t think people tend to think about the environment when they’re reading a novel. Balancing out our paper consumption by paying for Eco-Libris to plant trees is such a brilliant idea – everyone should be doing it!

Finally, what is your next project and when we can expect your next novel?
My next novel, ‘The Most Beautiful Thing’, is on the horizon, and follows 14 year old Joe as he spends the summer in Amsterdam with his aunt Nel. I already have the NEXT novel queued up in my head, but I’m hoping to take a break yet. I’m looking forward to a quiet summer!

Thanks Fiona!

Plant a Book: ELI, a leader in educational publishing, is partnering with Eco-Libris in a new program aiming to plant tens of thousands of trees

We are very proud to announce a new collaboration with ELI, a market leading scholastic publisher based in Italy. In collaboration with Eco-Libris, Eli is embarking on a reforestation program, entitled 'Plant a Book', with the aim to plant tens of thousands of trees in 2010 and 2011.

The United Nations has declared 2011 as the International Year of the Forest and ELI, a leader in educational publishing, would like to make a difference and make a difference: For their most important publications (Team Up, Your Vitamines and Mathematics, the new series of ELI Readers), ELI set up a goal to plant a tree for every book!

And that's not everything - this is an educational program that strives to get students involved. Inside each book there will be a Tree Card. This card has an individual identification number. The students will be asked to register on the website www.piantaunlibro.it and Eco-Libris will plant a tree for each number once registered. ELI is expecting to plant 40,000 trees with Eco-Libris in 2011!

Our collaboration with ELI has already resulted in new trees that are being planted in Guatemala by our planting partner AIR, when ELI planted 5000 trees for another educational series they publish - the the new graded readers series which is also printed on FSC-certified paper.

ELI Publishing is a truly green publisher, who is committed to reducing its impact on the environment and strives to become more environmentally responsible. They're not stopping with planting trees and all of their new books will be printed on FSC-certified paper. Not to mention the fact that they want to educate young students and encourage them to adopt sustainable practices by giving them an example and providing them information to increase their awareness to the need in change.

You're welcome to check out the new website that ELI lauchned for the 'Plant a Book' program - www.piantaunlibro.it (it's in Italian, so you might need the good services of Google Translate).

Can the first ten pages of a book and crowdsourcing become the next model of publishing?

Springwise is always a good source of innovative ideas and last week I've learned there about a very new innovative model of publishing, using a crowdsourcing strategy and based on ten pages.

Yes, just the first ten pages of the book are required according to the new website called Tenpages.com to determine whether it's worth publishing or not. And who will decide? the readers. But unlike similar ventures, like WEbook, here the readers don't vote only with their mouse, but also with their wallets.

So how does it work? Here's the description of the process from Springwise:

Aspiring writers register for free on TenPages and post the first 10 pages or more of their book. Those pages then become viewable to the site's prospective shareholders, who can buy up to 200 shares in any book for EUR 5 each; a widget is available to help them promote their favourites among their own social networks. The books that sell 2,000 shares during the four months they remain active on the site—garnering EUR 10,000—get put into production at one of TenPages' partner publishers, which include Pearson, The Workers Press and The House of Books. Authors get paid EUR 1,000 from the initial funds raised, while the remainder is held over for publishing and promoting the final book. The author then has eight months to write the tome with the help of a professional editor.

Tenpages.com is collaborating with three publishers to make it work: De Arbeiderspers, The House of Books and Pearson.

Will it work? will it become a new popular model of publishing? I guess that this model has couple of advantages that makes it attractive both for publishers and readers (publishers reduce their risk and readers have a chance to profit money and prestige, as their name ppear in the back of the published books they helped discover), but it has a chance to become a real alternative model only when we'll see couple of success stories or bestsellers that came out of it.

You're welcome to check out their website, but it's only in Dutch, so might need the services of Google translate to dive in.

Raz @ Eco-Libris

New video: Our marketing manager takes a break from the giveaway!

Couple of weeks ago we started a new green gift campaign (http://www.ecolibris.net/gifts.asp), where we give great gifts that promote green reading! From free green books to gift cards for Strand Bookstore and BookSwim, the Netflix for books, Eco-Libris is now rewarding readers who balance out 25 books or more by planting trees.

We produced couple of funny videos to promote our giveaway with my baby daughter Shira. Here's the latest one, where she's taking a break from reading so many green books..

Here are links to the two other videos:

Green book of the week: The Virtuous Consumer by Leslie Garrett

Today we review a green book that is a great guide for the rest of us!

Our book is:

The Virtuous Consumer: Your Essential Shopping Guide for a Better, Kinder, Healthier World

Author: Leslie Garrett

LESLIE GARRETT is a National Award-Winning Journalist, Author and Editor, based near Toronto, Canada. Her work has appeared in Chatelaine, Canadian Living, Today’s Parent and many other national publications. Her syndicated column The Virtuous Consumer runs monthly in City Parent, Big Apple Parent, About Families and many other publications.

She also writes The Virtuous Traveler, a syndicated column that appears in the online newsletter of NBC travel editor Peter Greenberg and was syndicated in The Globe & Mail. Together her columns reached close to two million readers.

Leslie has also written a dozen children’s books, including a biography of renowned environmentalist David Suzuki and “EarthSmart”, a book for young children on protecting the environment. Her books are widely available and well reviewed.

Publisher: New World Library

Published on: June 2007

What this book is about?
(from the publisher's website)

Sure, there are people who chain themselves to old-growth trees, raise their one child diaper-free, and make their own soap. The Virtuous Consumer is for the rest of us, struggling to make choices that are better for the planet — and for us. Leslie Garrett has created a comprehensive reference guide that — like a smart, funny, and eco-conscious friend — will steer you toward ethical purchases for everything from lipstick to cars, kids' toys to a new mattress. The Virtuous Consumer is your key to shopping consciously and creating a simpler, greener lifestyle.

What we think about it?
I want to begin and say that I agree with the book's description - just like Festivus, it is definitely for the rest of us. I guess some fellows I personally like, such as Mark Boyle won't find it handy, but many others who struggle with consuming issues and eventually buy some stuff will find this book very useful.

This is definitely not a guide that drives you to shop. No Sir! Garrett is well aware of the three R's (reduce, reuse, recycle) - for her this is a viable part of the choice to live consciously
and she brings it to the reader's attention whenever possible, as well as the fact that buying less is always a reasonable option.

I've read many guides that provide you with great information and recommendations on the best choices you have as a consumer. Still, I found The Virtuous Consumer different. It is thorough, detailed, brings you information straight from the experts and is very comprehensive - it talks about almost everything, from cleaning products to parties and celebrations. But what really got me into this book is Garrett's attitude - she's funny, realistic, frank and always personal, providing examples from her own experiences.

This attitude makes The Virtuous Consumer much less of a textbook and much more of a friend you want to hear her advice.
All I can say is that although I read about it in many places, this is the first guide that actually got me to move my butt and check the labels of some of the cosmetic products I use to see if they have 'fragrance' on the list of ingredients (unfortunately the answer is yes..), and to consider for the first time other options that are better both to me and to the environment. And I'm sure this is not the last time this book will push me to check products I buy and consider better alternatives.

Lat but not least, I also want to mention that this book is printed on 100% post consumer-waste recycled paper.

Bottom Line: A useful and enjoyable guide that I recommend with all my heart!

Disclosure: We received a copy of this book from the author.

If you're looking for other interesting green-themed books, you are invited to check out our green books page on Eco-Libris website's green resources section.
